Legal Wellness and the NFL

Hi. It’s Danny Karon, your Lovable Lawyer, here with your NFL shot of legal wellness. I want to talk about how legal wellness intersects with the NFL. This is something a lot of folks don’t know about. Ten years ago, the NFL got sued by a bunch of players because they were keeping quiet, hiding evidence that concussions caused brain damage, dementia, Alzheimer’s, and depression. The players didn’t like it obviously and they stood up a class action against the NFL.

What ended up happening after a number of years is that about a billion dollars got paid to the players and the NFL made changes. It used to be the case that if you had a concussion, you could only go back on the field if you weren’t rendered unconscious. Now, there’s a four-point protocol you’ve got to go through before you go back on the playing field.

So, money and changes are what the players got as a result of their class action lawsuit against the NFL. That’s how legal wellness and the NFL intersect, as legal wellness does with so many aspects of life.
